Amsterdam, 21 June 2022 – It’s International Yoga Day! From Bikram to Vinyasa: yoga is very popular in The USA. The latest statistics from data specialist BoldData show that the number of yoga studios has grown by 166% over the last 10 years. From 6,010 schools in 2011 to 15,975 in 2021. However, the growth seems to have come to a halt. In 2021, the number of yoga studios only grew by 330 (+2,1%). Time for data specialist BoldData to roll out the numbers.
Yoga hype over?
Yoga studios have become an integral part of the American street scene. Over the past 10 years, the number of companies has grown by 166%. Especially 2016 was a good year for yoga practitioners in The USA. That year 1,499 yoga entrepreneurs opened their own yoga school. A growth of 14%. 2020 seems to be a tipping point for the popularity of yoga, from this moment the growth slows down. Last year only 330 new studios opened their doors, a growth of 2,1%.
LA is the yoga temple
When it comes to yoga, Los Angeles is the place to be. With 582 locations, LA counts the most yoga studios in The USA. San Diego comes in second with 307 yoga studios. Phoenix is also a good place to practice yoga with also 283 yoga schools. These three cities combined give home to 7% of the total amount of yoga schools in The USA.
The USA is the world’s biggest yoga country
With 16,014 studio’s, The USA is home to the most yoga studios worldwide [1]. With a coverage of 43% of all yoga studios in the world. Germany comes in second with 3,522 yoga studios (10%). Australia completes the top 3 with 2,572 yoga schools (7%).
